The Forty-eight Preludes And Fugues By Johann Sebastian Bach, Mehmet Okonsar’s Well Tempered Clavier Posted By: Jose L. Brophy Mehmet Okonsar presents his full set of 48 preludes and fugues by Johann Sebastian Bach in a 3 CD set. I am glad to hear this set; together with Gould, Okonsar is my ideal player of Bach on the piano. The only large scale work by Johann Sebastian Bach which can be compared to this is the same pianists’ Goldberg Variations. Okonsar’s method of playing will always get the finest, most sympathetic and singing tone in every one of the little gems which constitute this amazing work. The statement of the themes in each fugue shows some of their deep intellectual conception, as well as their physical strength. I have never found so much imagination which nevertheless remains "true" in the "style" of Bach playing, specially when done on piano. Okonsar never spoils the textures by sprawling. I think he has the perfect mind for Bach. Yet he can do some things unexpectedly and can be even shocking at places. He may be said to be inclined to spread too many chords, though. This is skill and knowledge which emerges together with concepts and artistic vision, that I can detect.js bach sarabande bach midi download js bach history j s bach organ music short biography of johann sebastian bach johann sebastian bach short bi js bach sarabande J.s. Bach’s Goldberg Variations (bwv988) Posted By: Mehmet Okonsar The Goldberg Variations is often cited as an unsurpassed model for contrapuntal composition. While the perfection of the canons is often emphasized by music theorists, the most important aspect of the work, in my mind, is the instrumental extravaganza. Those variations are the "Etudes d’execution transcendantales" of their time. They expand and raise the harpsichord virtuosity to levels never heard before. In this work, J.S. Bach has written the most fantastic and outrageous keyboard idioms of his time and he has pushed existing ones to their limits. Visionary hand choreographies (Var.5, 20, 26), double thirds and sixths (Var.23) double trills (Var. 28), alternating chords (Var.29) and many other keyboard acrobatics make this work one of the greatest instrumental achievements of musical history, together with the studies by Liszt, the "Gaspard de la Nuit" or the "Three Movements from Petrouchka". The contrapuntal music writing styles (fugues and canons) have acquired an aura of seriousness and almost religiousness during the romantic epoch. After having been forgotten for a century or so, when J. S. Bach was "discovered" by Felix Mendelssohn, he was seen as the musician par-excellence for the "salvation" of romantically tormented souls.
